Nora FitzGerald Meldrum

Nora's background as a litigator, advisor, trainer, and in-house partner enables her to serve as a proactive, strategic advocate for her clients. Nora has a wide-ranging litigation and employment law practice, with a primary focus on employment litigation defense and employment compliance counseling.  Nora's class action litigation experience includes litigation management and defense of claims arising under the Age Discrimination in Employment Act, Title VII, the Americans with Disabilities Act, and the Fair Labor Standards Act, including tip-credit litigation.  She also has extensive experience in negotiating, implementing, and overseeing compliance with federal class action consent decrees in civil rights and discrimination matters.

Nora dedicates a substantial portion of her practice to preventative counseling, working to develop practical approaches to avoid disputes -- and to promote respectful, inclusive work environments -- through training, policy development, and advising on workplace issues. These include: best-practices audits of employment handbooks and policies, reviews of job descriptions and employee classifications, developing background check and drug testing policies, preparing employment contracts and agreements, reviewing privacy compliance measures, assisting in interpreting and enforcing non-competition agreements, and real-time advice and counsel through discipline and discharge situations.

Nora has a passion for developing interactive and effective compliance training programs, drawing on her experience serving as the Director of Northwestern University's Sexual Harassment Prevention Office. She has partnered with her clients' human resources professionals to develop customized virtual and in-person interactive programs on a wide range of topics, including: discrimination, harassment and retaliation prevention (for managers and non-managerial employees); workplace investigations; and wage and hour compliance.

Prior to joining the firm, Nora served as Associate General Counsel (Brand Protection/Litigation and Employment) for a nationwide restaurant company and Claims Counsel for a multi-state maritime manufacturing and transportation company.  Through these roles, she developed a deep understanding of the many compliance issues facing multi-state and hospitality employers, including responsible alcohol service, food safety/product liability, and third party/guest claims. Her experience includes crisis response, crisis communications, risk planning/management, and conducting whistleblower and other confidential investigations.

In addition to her extensive hospitality law practice, Nora's clients span a variety of public and private sectors, including manufacturing, retail, healthcare, financial services, transportation, and higher education.  From representing start-ups to large, publicly traded companies, Nora enjoys collaborating with her clients to develop cost-effective strategies in line with business objectives.
